บทนำ

ในไวยากรณ์ภาษาอังกฤษ ประโยคที่สมบูรณ์จะต้องประกอบด้วยประธาน กริยา และกรรม ในกรณีของประโยคที่กริยาต้องการกรรม หากประโยคขาดส่วนใดส่วนหนึ่งเหล่านี้ ประโยคนั้นก็จะกลายเป็นประโยคที่ไม่สมบูรณ์ เรียกอีกอย่างว่า fragment

ประเภทของ Fragment

Fragment แบ่งออกเป็น 2 ประเภทหลักๆ ดังนี้

• Dependent clause fragment เป็นกลุ่มคำที่มีประธานและกริยา แต่ไม่สามารถอยู่โดดๆ เป็นประโยคได้ เนื่องจากขาดกรรมหรือคำเชื่อมที่จำเป็น
• Independent clause fragment เป็นกลุ่มคำที่มีประธานและกริยาครบถ้วน แต่ขาดเครื่องหมายวรรคตอนที่จำเป็น ทำให้ผู้อ่านเข้าใจผิดว่าเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของประโยคก่อนหน้า

• The cat that is sleeping on the couch.
• The dog who is chasing the ball.
• The boy who ran away.

ตัวอย่างของ Independent clause fragment

• The cat is sleeping on the couch.
• The dog is chasing the ball.
• The boy ran away.

วิธีแก้ไข Fragment

Fragment สามารถแก้ไขได้โดยการเติมส่วนประกอบที่ขาดหายไป หรือเติมเครื่องหมายวรรคตอนที่จำเป็น ตัวอย่างเช่น

Dependent clause fragment

• The cat that is sleeping on the couch. -> The cat that is sleeping on the couch is very cute.
• The dog who is chasing the ball. -> I saw the dog who is chasing the ball.
• The boy who ran away. -> I saw the boy who ran away.

Independent clause fragment

• The cat is sleeping on the couch. -> The cat is sleeping on the couch while the dog is chasing the ball.
• The dog is chasing the ball. -> The dog is chasing the ball as fast as he can.
• The boy ran away. -> The boy ran away because he was scared.

สรุป

Fragment คือประโยคที่ไม่สมบูรณ์ เนื่องจากขาดประธาน กริยา หรือกรรม ในกรณีของประโยคที่กริยาต้องการกรรม หากประโยคขาดกรรม ประโยคนั้นจะกลายเป็น Dependent clause fragment หากประโยคขาดเครื่องหมายวรรคตอน ประโยคนั้นจะกลายเป็น Independent clause fragment

Fragment สามารถแก้ไขได้โดยการเติมส่วนประกอบที่ขาดหายไป หรือเติมเครื่องหมายวรรคตอนที่จำเป็น
